Depression

Depression: What it is and how to overcome it?

Depression is a health condition that can affect all areas of your life. It is characterised by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, extreme sadness, loss of interest in activities, irritability and/or suicidal ideation. While the exact cause of depression varies, a combination of biological factors and environmental stressors appear to contribute to its onset and progression. Thankfully, Minds For The Future psychologists can help you manage your health condition so that you live a happy and fulfilling life.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Unhappiness and Despair
  • Loss of Interest in Daily Activities
  • Changes in Appetite and Weight
  • Loss of Energy
  • Anger, Frustration and/or Irritability
  • Suicidal Thoughts

Biological Causes

  • Genetics: Genetics appear to play a significant role in the development of depression. In fact, this health condition tends to run in families.
  • Brain Abnormalities: Abnormalities in your brain structure and/or chemistry can lead to depression.
  • Hormone Imbalances: It appears that hormonal imbalances can cause depression. In fact, research suggests that there is a link between high cortisol levels and depression. Cortisol is the hormone that controls how your body reacts to stress, fear and anger.

Environmental Causes

  • Vitamin Deficiencies: When your body does not get an adequate supply of vitamin B6, folic acid and omega-3 fatty acids it can lead to depression.
  • Relationship Issues: Relationship issues (divorce, constant fighting, cheating, etc.) can cause depression. Moreover, feelings of loneliness and isolation can actually worsen depression symptoms.
  • Change and Loss: A significant change or loss (loss of a job, a loved one, pet, friend, health and/or financial stability or a change in school, job and/or living situation) can trigger a crisis, which in turn can cause or aggravate your depression symptoms.
